Superfast Broadband gathers pace in East Hampshire

As part of the Government’s commitment to expand availability of Superfast Broadband across the UK, East Hampshire has been benefiting from £15.2 million allocated to Hampshire for the publicly funded Phase 1 and/or 2 roll-outs.

It is estimated that almost 25,000 premises in East Hampshire now benefit from coverage as a result of the on-going commercial roll-out programme*, with a further 10,540 now receiving Superfast Broadband coverage as a result of the publicly funded programme supported by the government, local authorities and devolved administrations.

The good news came in a note from Ed Vaizey, Minister of State for Culture and the Digital Economy,

Mr Vaizey added:

“There is more good news. Thanks to the contracts we have negotiated with BT, we can ‘claw back’ money when take up exceeds a certain level and reinvest it to get to more homes and businesses. BT has made this money available well ahead of schedule and I am pleased to tell you that means an extra £2.6m will be allocated to Hampshire.”

East Hampshire MP Damian Hinds said:

“I am delighted that more premises are now receiving coverage as a direct result of extra public funds. I do know how frustrating it is for residents and businesses locally who can't get decent broadband and there are still too many of those across East Hampshire."

Better Connection

Broadband is now an essential utility, alongside gas, electric and the phone line. The Internet is the gateway to many services, and more and more people in East Hampshire are home-workers.I support the government's Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme, which is spending £1.7 billion on rolling out superfast broadband, with 40,000 premises being wired up every week. This investment aims to provide 95% of the UK with access by 2017. In East Hampshire, 15,370 more premises will have superfast connections by 2017.
